Female R&B Artists

In R&B in general, women are seen as 'sex objects'. This is seen in many music videos as women are portrayed  very sexually and are revealing to the audience, this is done because as the target audience is thought to be male. Here are a few examples of music videos where women are portrayed as sex objects:

Iggy Azalea - Work

Beyonce - Single Ladies

Mike Will Made It and Miley Cyrus - 23

These examples show how females are portrayed in the music industry, they are revealing as this attracts more of a male audience and this is what artists want, as it allows them to gain more money.

Here are 3 examples of Female Artists within the R&B Genre:
  • Rita Ora - Rita Ora is a conventional artist within the R&B genre, she is represented well by the use of bling and revealing clothing which is a conventional representation of females within this genre. Rita Ora has her own trademark just like many other R&B artists, for her it is the red lipstick, this is showing the sex object element of the genre as red is a colour of passion and desire. Her trademark has influenced teenage girls to dress in this way by using red lipstick themselves.

  • Rihana - Rihanna is a Barbadian, her music is culturally influenced by her heritage and adds a reggae twist to her tracks. Rihanna has always followed or even sometimes set the style of the current R&B trends, for example when she made the bob haircut trendy again. This shows her influence towards many fans of hers and shows her influence to fans of the R&B genre. Females are shown to be quite powerful figures over men in this genre as men go crazy for the female artists. This is definitely seen in Rihanna's music which is very voluptuous and suggestive, this will create a sense of want around her from male fans and male listeners of R&B
